Tuesday morning had a cool breeze, but everyone would be delighted to have a good rain. The temperatures reached 101 in New York’s Central park Monday as the nation’s month- long heal wave continued its spread into the Northeast The death toll from the hot weather since June 22 rose to at least 1.181 in 21 states The population in 19 western North Carolina mountain counties has increased by nearly 14 percent over the past 10 years according to a survey of the preliminary 1980 U. S. Census Bureau figures. In Polk County the figure showed only at 6.4 percent increase — from 11,735 to 12.484. Columbus was down 3 percent from 731 to 709; Saluda up. 8.6 percent from 546 to 593; Tryon down 12.3 percent from 1.951 to 1,711. Tryon Town Manager Chuck Lott stated that the Town would have to contest the count as Tryon had more housing than it had 10 years ago. He stated that the census showed 100 vacant houses in Tryon and Continued On Back Page Shoots 64 Breaks Record Cecil Turner. Tryon Country Club pro, shot a sizzling 31-33 for a 64 on July 20 to break the previous course record of 65 His playing partners were Bubber McCall and Ricky Burns. Shoot Eagle Marion Palmer scored an eagle on the second hole of the Tryon Country Club with a driver, a five iron and a 160 yard four irons. Arrested Michael Dukes. Polk County Deputy Sheriff arrested a 26-year-old Sumter. S. C. man early Monday morning on 1-26 near Columbus. The man had two Social Security cards — one in the name of Johnny Michael Hodges and the other in the name of Michael Lane. Hodges reportedly tried to sell a pistol at the Columbus Amoco Quick Service and they were suspicious and notified the Sheriff’s Dept. Hodges was charged with driving after license suspended, carrying a concealed weapon and possession of stolen guns. He is being held under $1,000 bond Sheriff Boyce Carswell said that he is wanted in Sumter, S. C. for grand larceny. Windows Broken Polk County Sheriff Boyce Carswell reports that the windows in the basement of the Silver Creek Baptist Church were broken by vandals Friday night. Miss Columbus Contestants Wanted The Miss Columbus Pageant will be held August 16th in the Stearns School Auditorium. The pageant sponsored by the local Jaycees is open to all girls who are at least a high school senior, not be over 25 years old, be single and a resident of Columbus Township. Those who are professional models, past or present are excluded There is a $10 application fee. Contestants or their sponsors may pick up applications al the NCNB in Columbus. The Colum bus Town Office or from Frankie Greene, (894-8480). Applications should be returned to Mr. Greene as soon as possible. Polk Central Class Of ‘65 The Polk Central Class of 1965 will hold its 15th reunion Saturday. August 2nd at the Railroad House Restaurant in Saluda. Those who have not made reservations should call Mrs. Earl Thompson or Mrs. George Vosburgh Miss Frances Newman has returned from a trip to Germany and Austria. Highlight of the trip was attending the Oberammer gau Passion Play. Other points loured were Heidleberg, Rothen burg and Munich. Germany and Salzbury. Vienna and Innsbruck in Austria Returning home via Zurich, Switzerland Polk County Downs Harris-Shiloh 14-7 The big bats of the Polk County Little League All-Star team downed Harris 14-7 Monday afternoon at Harmon Field in the second game of the double elimination playoffs. In the first game Rutherfordton beat Forest City 2-0. Leading the Polk County attack was Jeff Jackson with 3 for 4 (one a home run); Tony Grant 2 for 2 with an inside the park home run ; Darren Jones with 2 for 3. Mark Feagan mixed 2 walks with a grand slam home run in the second. For Harris, Walker was the bin stick with 2 for 3, one a home run The Polk County team plays the winner of the Rutherfordton- Green Creek game at 4 today The 6 p.m game will be between Forest City and the loser of the Green Creek-Rutherford- on game.
